Market Art Fair | Sara Möller & Madhat Kakei: Liljevalchs Konsthall, Stockholm

Sara Möller’s organic sculptures delve into the interplay between fragility and strength, movement and permanence, while at the same time contemplating the very boundaries of the ceramic material. Her process can be described as one characterized by volatility and play, as the creation of new forms come about through a continuous dialogue with the material. Unexpected and playful elements such as feathers, kitchen tools, or even a knife’s edge, are occasionally integrated into her works. 

Sara Möller (b. 1982, Växjö) lives and works in Gothenburg, Sweden. She holds an MFA from HDK Adacemy of Art and Design in Gothenburg. Previous solo exhibition venues include Färgfabriken, Stockholm, Norrtälje Konsthall, Vandalorum, Värnamo, Hordaland Kunstsenter, Bergen, and Höganäs Museum. Her work has also been included in group shows at CHART Art Fair, Copenhagen, Charlottenborg Kunsthal, Copenhagen, CLAY Museum of Ceramic Art, Middelfart, Röhsska Museet, Gothenburg, Form/Design Center, Malmö, and Liljevalchs Konsthall, Stockholm.

Möller’s work is represented in several public collections, including Public Art Agency Sweden, The Swedish Association for Art, and Höganäs Museum. In 2013, she received the prestigious Beckers Art Award, and in 2022, she was awarded the ten-year working grant by the Swedish Arts Grants Committee.

Madhat Kakei’s body of work unfolds as an exploration of the sculptural possibilities within painting. His abstract works are meticulously crafted through the application of numerous layers of paint. Over the years, his paintings have become increasingly sculptural, featuring rough and embossed textures. Kakei’s work draws connections to the monochromatic tradition, but still encompasses a wide range of colors that occasionally peek through the outermost layer of paint.

Madhat Kakei (b. 1954, Kirkuk, Kurdistan) moved to Sweden in the mid-1980s and splits his time between Stockholm, France and Japan. He is educated at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad and the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. Previous solo exhibition venues include Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, Stockholm, Galerie Maria Lund, Paris, and Galerie Aronowitsch, Stockholm. His work has also been included in group exhibitions at Liljevalchs Konsthall, Stockholm, The Miyagi Museum of Art, Sendai, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Tokyo, Museo Municipal, Madrid, and Chiba Prefectural Museum of Art, Chiba.

Kakei is represented in the collections of Moderna Museet, Stockholm, The Kurdish Library & Museum, New York, and The National Museum of Modern Art, Baghdad, to name a few.
