Overview

In her practice, Hilda Hellström thematizes around the immanent forces and narratives within materials and the surrounding natural world. Her work encompasses ideas around transformation and liminal states, presented through a preoccupation in casting processes and metamorphic aspects of materials. She uses craft techniques to convey natural- and cultural histories alongside personal experiences. Her work draws upon geology, archeology, alchemy and pantheism where she interweaves fabulation and fabrication, shape and image making. Hellström has developed her practice using intricate casting techniques that explore the inherent qualities of transformative materials. With an empirical and experimental approach, her interest lies in how cultural or emotional associations of material affect our perception of the world around us.
